Vivisection

Sat Aug 8, 2009, 2:51 PM
  • Mood: Tired
The Journal
This was actually posted on the site awhile ago...
Vivisection is the act of injuring living tissue. It is normally done for the purpose of scientific research, and every day thousands of animals die. There are multiple different tests that scientists conduct. One such practice is the Draize test; this involves putting chemicals on the eyes of rabbits and then observing them for three days to see what damage has been done. The Lethal Dose 50 test is when 50% of the animals in the experiment die. Skin irritancy tests are just that. Chemicals are placed on the skin of an animal, and researchers wait and see what happens. Besides the fact that these experiments are ridiculously cruel (animals endure poisoning, mutilation, diseases, incarceration, and death), they are next to useless; no matter what you’ve been told.

People have died due to drugs that work with animals, but not with humans. Over and over again it has been proven that Homo sapiens are not biologically similar to other animals. What cures them may not cure us; what kills them may save human lives. For example hemlock and strychnine, both of which are plants, are fatal to humans, yet completely harmless to animals such as mice and monkeys. When the drug ‘Vioxx’ was released to the public after having been tested successfully on animals, roughly 160,000 people suffered heart attacks. Many of these users actually died.

There are also various alternative methods. Humans do volunteer, and they don’t have to go through anything like what animals do in the labs. Computer modelling is another common method medical researchers and doctors use. These methods are proven to work, and don’t harm a single creature. It was thanks to investigation and analysis that childhood leukaemia can now be treated. Perfect human models can be used to study disorders such as epilepsy. Not only does it advance medical science, but since this is all done on a computer no human or animal is inconvenienced. If the government stopped spending money to try and cover up vivisection, and used it instead to fund alternative methods, there would be nothing to cover up.

Get more information, help stop vivisection: [link]

I could have gone into a lot more detail, but the longer it is, the less of you actually take the time to read it.

I'm currently doing everything by myself, so bare with me if I get a tad behind. I still have to deal with notes after this journal, but it will get done. Still working on the site, believe it or not. And more pages will be up before the end of the month.

Hard Hitting Stories
July fifth. Two men decide the correct way to move a bull is to tie a rope around its neck and attach it to the car. The animal suffered from abrasions and burns, and quite frankly, we should all be glad it wasn’t much worse. I find it hard to comprehend how someone could be so cruel to an animal, and feel absolutely no remorse. What is going through their heads as they do this? It makes no sense.
The driver says he did nothing wrong, claiming the bull was stubborn. No logic could decently explain what they did as right, but his logic is just horrible. If a child is stubborn, you don’t tie a rope around his or her neck and drag them behind the car to go to the grocery store. It’s not humane, person or animal.
Luckily, after being dragged half a mile, the bull survived. The men were stopped by a cop and face 90 days in jail and a $1000 fine, each. If you ask me, they’re getting off light.

Featured Animal
Hey, Autumn here!
Once a week, we will feature a different endangered animal, and give tips on how you can help them survive.

This weeks featured animal is the Western Giant Eland.

There are only about 170 Western Giant Eland's surviving in the wild today. Populations have decreased because of hunting, habitat destruction, and disease. What remains of the subspecies is protected in the Niokolo-Koba National Park.

Poultry

The Journal
Some general(ish) information on poultry.
Before I give you any information, I want to try and make one thing clear; I am not asking you to become a vegetarian/vegan. At no point shall I ask you to give up animal products. What I am asking is for you to be aware. To know where you're getting your food from, and if possible to please acquire your meat from local stores and butchers, where killing is as humane as it can be and where living conditions are much more acceptable. I understand that this is near impossible to do when living in cities.

Chickens are the most abused animal on the planet. They are crammed into disgusting sheds (filled with feces and corpses) by the tens of thousands. Many die of heart attack caused by stress; some even die of starvation. Often their legs cannot withstand their weight as they are crippled from growing so large so fast. When they can't walk, they can't reach their food. They are fed antibiotics so they grow faster, and because of this extra weight their organs often give out. Poultry is beaten with a metal rod, and tossed aside while still very much alive. This sort of treatment is perfectly legal according to companies. After spending weeks in these conditions, poultry is shoved into cramped cages and travel for hours to the slaughterhouse. They are tossed about without care, and are forced to endure extreme weather conditions without food and water. Once they arrive at the slaughterhouses, they are shackled and their throats are slit. At this time, they are possibly still conscious. The animals are sometimes scalded alive in feather removal tanks.

Hens are crammed into cages for egg production, where many go insane and attack one another. Because of this, their beaks are seared off with a hot blade. They live their entire lives being unable to spread their wings because they're so crowded; they cannot do other natural things such as dust bathing and foraging. It takes 34 hours, to produce just one egg. If egg production drops, food can be withheld for up to 14 days. This shocks the hens back into a laying cycle. This obviously causes many to die of starvation. Many hens have weak and broken bones, worn down bodies, and hemorrhaging by the time they make it to slaughter.

Besides keeping in mind the above facts, please also keep in mind that not all poultry goes through this. Many farms/factories/slaughterhouses are as humane as you can be when killing something.

The above information will be posted on the site as soon as the hosting site stops being a jerk. Heh.
(EDIT: It's posted now.)

Summer's here, so hopefully things will get done. The fact that I'm updating the journal is a plus sign.

Meat

The Journal
Before anything else.
April is animal cruelty prevention month. So be on the look-out for any events pertaining to animal rights.

Some general(ish) information on pigs and cows destined for our dinner tables.

PIGS
Pigs are kept in tiny stalls that don't allow mothers to turn around for most of their pregnancy. Shortly after birth piglets are mutilated and castrated with no pain killers taken. Fall behinds (pigs that aren't growing fast enough) are killed brutally when their heads are slammed against the floor. They grow to quickly and are unable to support their mass. Pigs that are ill or injured continue to suffer because being alive means they can still be sold for profit. When they don't appear to be able to make it, they are killed inhumanely with a captive bolt gun. To get them to move, handlers beat them with gate rods and then they are packed into tight, unventilated trucks where many times, their legs snap from the weight of pigs above them. Sometimes they freeze to the sides of the truck, sometimes they die of dehydration. They are then forced onto the killing floor where improper stunning means they are awake as their throats are slit, and even when they are dipped in the scolding tank for hair removal.

CATTLE
Cattle are castrated, horns chopped off and repeatedly branded. All without pain killers, without being able to do a thing about it. They are later taken to auction where electric prods are used to torment them into going wherever it happens to be that the auctioneers want them to go. The cattle is still sold even though many of the times the cows have cancer, are ill, and have wounds leaking pus. Calves are kept for a year in crammed feed lots before being shipped through all weather extremes. When they are finally slaughter their throats are slit and they are skinned and dismembered. All while still conscious.

DAIRY AND VEAL
Dairy cows are hooked to a machine several times a day that milks them and often injures them. When they are unable and too weak to produce anymore milk, they are sent off to the slaughter house or auction. Over 100,000 of these cows are unable to walk off the transport truck, yet still they find their way to your dinner plate. Most meat you buy is from dairy cows that died too young and that have been impregnated yearly just so they can continue to produce milk. Calves are taken from their mothers shortly after birth which causes both mother and baby undue amounts of stress. Males are sold for slaughter, while females will suffer the same fate as their mother. Calves are kept in small cages where they cannot even turn around or even really lie down. In this way, if you're drinking milk, you're supporting veal. Even those these calves can barely walk and have muscle atrophy due to lack of use they are still sold.

Besides keeping in mind the above facts, please also keep in mind that not all animals go through this. Many farms/factories/slaughterhouses are as humane as you can be when killing something.

Yes, this is just copy and pasted from the site. Shhh.

Devious Journal Entry

The Journal
Hey guys. How're you?
Been awhile, I know. I'm sorry. I apologize a lot, don't I?
I went on vacation, and I have been back for about a week or two, but I'm so behind homework it's ridiculous. March break is in like, 10 or 11 days. Once I'm out of school for a whole nine days, I hope to get a lot done with DTA. I know, I probably said that before Christmas, but I mean it this time. I really want to get some stuff done right now, but seriously. When I say behind in the home, man, do I mean behind.
Soon, don't worry, soon we'll get things going again. =/

As well, take a moment out of your day to read this and donate if you can: [link]
It won't take that much time out of your day, no more than reading this journal will.

For all you wolf lovers, sign a new petition here: [link]

Hey guys. How are you all?
Some more working is getting done on the site, so I thought I'd just let you know exactly what we're doing. Heh.
The Vivisection info has all been typed up. I'm just waiting for Fallen to edit it, add some things, take some things away. Then it will be posted on the site.
I'm also currently redoing the member list. About time eh? Yeah, I'm slow.
After that, if it's not too late I'll probably go around and talk to people about posting their art on the site. Uh, and I think that's about all the things you can expect to get done anytime soon... I don't know when Fallen will be on next, so it's hard for me to say when the Vivisection information will be up.

Thank you for all your patience!
